Generation Connections

Interested in Distributed Energy Resources (DER) including solar panels, energy storage facilities, etc that generate power?  Complete a Preliminary Consultation Information Request (PCIR) – applicable for all generation connection sizes. We will review the PCIR  and establish classification and provide you the connection details of the proposed project and outline available capacity and applicable steps.

Submit your project idea. Click on PCIR Form (below) to open downloadable form.

Protection Philosophy

The Sample Protection Philosophy document is a summary of a protection philosophy.

This document serves as a guide for applications regarding kinds of protections. This document is not an approval process. This information should help applicants file complete applications for connections.

Sample Protection-Philosophy

Applicants are cautioned NOT to incur major expenses until Atikokan Hydro approves the proposed connection. Note, ESA approval is required prior to energization.

Net Metering 10 kW or less

Net Metering is a program whereby eligible customers with specific generation facilities can reduce their net energy costs by exporting surplus generated energy back onto the utility distribution system for credit against the energy the customer consumes from the distribution system. Program Compliance with Ontario Regulation 541/05 – Net Metering

Timelines for Review & Responses

1. Applicant submits Net Metering Connection Application Form

2. Distributor within 15 days reviews application form. Distributor may contact applicant for more information.

3. Distributor advices Applicant if there is adequate distribution capacity to connect <10 kW (Micro-Embedded Generation facility)

4. Distributor issues Offer to Connect, Net Metering Agreement, to applicant assuming decides to proceed. Applicants responsibility to ensure Electrical Safety Authority requirements are met.

5. Applicant completes and submits Offer to Connect to the distributor. Responsibility of applicant to ensure distributor fees are paid in full.

6. Within 5 calendar distributor connects micro-embedded generation facility to the distribution system. Responsibility of the applicant to ensure ESA authorization to connect is issued.

Connection Impact Assessment (CIA) Atikokan Hydro Fee Schedule

10 KW or less — All net metering projects with a generation nameplate of 10 kW or less (CIA not required for metering projects 10 kW or less) $0

Greater than 10 kW Fees apply

These fees are for CIA study only and exclude applicable construction costs, metering, etc.

Upstream transmitter CIA study fees may apply. See Hydro One fee schedule.

Atikokan Hydro Capacity of Stations and Feeders

There is a limit to how much generation can be installed. This is for the integrity and reliabilty of the grid. Atikokan Hydro has both distributor and upstream transmitter capacity constraints for consideration with proposed generation projects.
